Official remembrance of the Bielski Brothers in Belarus, Poland and Israel.

Our project is dedicated to a chapter of Belarusian history that was forgotten during the Soviet period - "The Bielski partisans" activities in Stankievichy.

Belarus officially recognised their feat of arms only in 2008, while the Polish Institute of National Remembrance blames the group surrounding

the Bielski brothers for a massacre that occurred in Naliboki. In Israel, all members of the partisan group are considered national heroes.

In our project we will examine the reception and critique of the most famous book and movie dedicated to the issue: Nechama Tecs work

"Defiance: The Bielski Partisans"(1993) and Edvard Zvics movie "Defiance"(2008) based on this book, in Belarus, Poland and Israel.

The project will also follow up on the post-war fates of two former partisans who are still living in Belarus.

So the project can reveal a new perspective on the events in Belarus, Poland and Israel.

«To my mind the movie “Defiance” could be made much better» (Interview with Tamara Vershitskaya).

In search of Belarusian expert on our issue we visited small Belarusian town of Novogrudok. We lingered there in the local «Museum of Jewish Resistance» over coffee while Tamara Vershitskaya, Director of the museum, was telling us a lot of interesting not only about the reception and critique of the Hollywood movie «Defiance» in Belarus......

Tamara Vershitskaya:

Director of the «Museum of Jewish Resistance in Novogrudok», leading Belarusian expert on «The Bielski Brothers guerilla detachment», at present preparing materials for the documental film about the Bielski Brothers.

Interview:

- Dear Tamara Grigor'evna, what do you think about the movie made by a famous Hollywood director E. Zwick  "Defiance" (2008), which is based on the materials from the book written by Nechama Tec «Defiance: The Bielski Partisans» (1993)? Does it truly reflect real historical events that took place on the territory of the Western Belarus during WW II?

- Concerning the first part of your question, to my opinion, this movie has little to do with the study written by Nechama Tec. I guess the only thing that unites this movie and the book is the same name - Defiance. The thing is that the book has another sense. Of course the main idea of the movie and the book is similar. We can find the idea of "salvation", which is also represented in the movie. To my mind, this is the only resemblance. Nechama Tec collected a lot of facts, a lot of documentary from the Internet, but the movie itself is different. We can see the historical background in this movie but for a person who just came into the cinema and knows nothing about Bielski and Belarus won't understand this movie; he will not even understand where all those events took place. I have real evidence: some days ago a group of the Americans, one family - 9 people, visited our museum. They traveled all around Belarus and on the last day of their stay in the country they came to Novogrudok. They prepared for this trip, they read and heard about the Bielski. When the family had already seen half of the exposition they exclaimed: "Did it take place here?" You know, I was surprised as well. But this reaction could be expected. I had a chance to visit an unofficial premier of the movie "Defience" in New York. I got there by a lucky chance: former partisans, the relatives, the children, and the grandsons gathered there. This demo was organized by the Kushner family, during the war they escaped from the Novogrudok Ghetto and survived thanks to The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment. All those who presented at the event were full of emotions and gratefulness that finally everyone will hear Bielski story. But it appeared that Edward Zwick and his assistants did not visit Novogrudok. They did not invite us - museum workers as experts. They did not invite for the movie preparation those people who live in Belarus and explore this issue, who collect interviews from the people who knew The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment. They didn't invite as a consultant Jack Kagan, who now lives in London, he is a former partisan from The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment. This man wrote a book about The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment and its activities, the name of the book is "Surviving the Holocaust with the Russian Jewish partisans". Moreover he did a lot to present the story about the Bielski Brothers to the world community and the release of the movie to a great extend was able thanks to his research. He was the first to reveal the story about the Bielski Brothers; he was saying that it was his life work after he finished his own business. And due to all those facts the movie appeared to be as it is.

- How do you think? Such kind of history description, by the means of mass media, does it helps to preserve the remembrance of historical events among mere people, especially the youth? Or you think that the history should be told only by a detailed academic language?

- Everyone knows that young people today prefer to get information from movies rather than from books. It means that the release of this movie, whatever it is, has a great meaning. And to my mind even the reaction to his movie is not important, for example when someone says: "It's not true. They were not fighting in the woods." But this person got the information that there were Jews who fought and rescued 1230 people. And this really matters. Of course it is not the only way of making this topic popular. Now I am writing a screen script for some documentary because I am not satisfied with what was made by Edward Zwick. "Defiance" does not fully depict the Bielski family and the characters are also misrepresented: the only character which coincides with a real prototype is Zus. Neither Tuvia nor Asael, I even don't mention Archi. The women are shown completely different. I don't understand: why it happened so: in the book written by Nechama Tec all those characters are described in details, in particular Tuvia Bielski. Nechama Tec is a great psychologist and sociologist, the value of her book is that besides historical events she describes characters by the means of interviews and portrait sketches. I think now the documentary based on the interviews with real people, archive documents and analysis of experts and scientists, who explore this issue in Israel, USA, Belarus and Poland, is absolutely necessary.

- How do you think? What was the first reaction to the movie "Defiance" in our country, although it was not shown in cinemas in Belarus? What's your opinion - how did the description of the Bielski Brothers' activities in Belarusian national history influence this reaction?

- To my mind, in Belarus it is almost impossible to trace this connection. To be honest I thought that no one in Belarus would see this movie because film distribution centers didn't buy it. But a lot of people now use the Internet actively and I've heard that a lot of people have already seen it. To tell the truth I am surprised because young people watch it and say: "It's interesting". These people hear the Bielski story for the first time and they are really surprised that it happened here in Belarus. In our museum just two years ago we opened an expedition at the place where the Ghetto used to be, where the prisoners made a tunnel under the ground to escape and join The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment. That's why I can see how this story, which is represented at this museum exposition attracts visitors' attention, how it influences their reaction if it does.  This museum is mostly visited not by the Jews. At the beginning it used to be visited by Jewish youth groups, some Jewish communities, and then the museum became popular in the city: students from all local schools, colleague students and others visit special classes that we organize in the museum. And I never saw people who after visiting this museum would say: "Why did I come here?" Moreover, people get some emotions, because this is not a common exposition: it is a restored Ghetto barrack, plank bed, the interior is just the same as it used to be during the war. What surprises people is the fact that no other museums devoted to holocaust present such a detailed story of 250 people, some particular people. This is not just an abstract description of some brigade: "someone dug the tunnel, someone escaped". These are particular 250 people: here you can see their photos, hear their stories. Of course during one excursion we do not tell about everyone but some stories about real people create live pictures for the visitors, and this is really great... And you know, a very extraordinary thing happened this year: "in May I was invited to the school #5" in Novogrudok and was told: "We will have some pioneer meeting and the pioneer team of the 5th grade will be named in honor of Jack Kagan". Jack Kagan was a 14 years old boy who escaped from the Ghetto with his frost-bitten fingers during the war and joined Bielski Detachment. This story came into the mass consciousness. When I visited them every student told me some biographical moments from Jack's life, moments from his childhood, what happened during the war, who he is and where he is now. And you know - it is an immense event for Belarus. It changes the psychology of people: a lot of them even now consider the Jews as cowards that don't know how to fight; this stereotype will exist for a long time... Moreover every year the contest "The Voices of History" takes place in Novogrudok. It is a historical contest and all the schools of the city participate in it. One of the tasks during this competition is to represent on the stage some historical personalities and the competitors have to guess who it is. These years a lot of teams were showing Tuvia Bielski, not only the teams from Novogrudok, but as well from different schools of Grodno region... When I wrote to Jack Kagan that one of the pioneers' brigades got his name he answered me: "In 1939 when the Soviet Power established, when the schools opened and I went to the school, I wanted to become a pioneer because my father had a shoe shop." The dream of the man who is 81 now - came true... As you see Bielski story became popular here in Novogrudok not because of the movie (a lot of people here even didn't see this movie) but thanks to the book written by Jack Kagan. Many people read this book here and hand to it to others because there are not enough translated copies for everyone. Why it happened so? I personally saw the war in a different way after reading this book, I saw people during the war in Novogrudok: live, real, killed, and everything what happened with them. And to my mind there are few books like this one.

- What's your opinion, how active was the discussion about the release of this film in academic society, if such a discussion took place? As we know it is a close circle of people in Belarus.

- Yes, I think that in Belarus there is a limited number of such people. I cannot say that it was a discussion. Sometimes I communicate with the people who deal with this subject and who express their point of view: everyone calls this movie - a true Hollywood. Let's take as an example the last scene of the "German" operation - when the planes are flying, tanks are going... yes, the forest was bombed but nothing else.

-  How you personally describe the historical events connected with the The Bielski Brothers guerilla detachment within your professional activity? Do you think that the Bielski Brothers were heroes?

 - It is a very good question and it's not the first time I answer it. In December I made a speech at the conference in Berlin, the topic of my speech was: "Bielski partisans, a simple story of mere people?" The topic of heroism was a central one. We all know what means the stereotype of heroism applying to the Great Patriotic War. What was considered as heroism? To kill the enemy, to cover a pillbox hole with your body or to blow a train. Heroism was an action aimed at annihilation of the enemy. And what was Tuvia Bielski doing?  He declared that his main goal is to save people, save the Jews. He did it step by step during the whole time of occupation - two and a half years. Bielski Detachment started its activity in May - June 1942 when the first partisan detachments were formed. Stereotype has one peculiarity - if it is created once it survives for a long time. Thanks to the books of Simonov, Alekseevich, Bykov appeared a new character of a suffering man at war. However in mass consciences people who took part in that war are still divided into such groups as heroes, enemies and some casualties. And what The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment was doing does not suite this concept. Trying to save your own life during the war - is that a real heroism? Everyone thought that a person is just staying aside - doesn't matter how and where - sitting in a pit or a dugout in the woods. That's why until now we can hear a lot of critical remarks about The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment. This detachment rescued 1230 people, but those people were the Jews. Common peasants did not think about this detachment as about their defenders. That's why Soviet commanders recommended accompanying Jewish partisans by the Russians when they visited villages to get some food. That was the only way to escape conflicts with locals. Peasants reduced to help the Jewish partisans, and that was a serious problem. It's difficult to call The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment heroes according to the Soviet understanding of this term. They were fighting for their own lives and the lives of other people. May be in future the understanding of the term "heroism" will change in the former-USSR states.

- On your opinion, activity of the The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment was phenomena or only one page of the Jewish resistance on the former USSR territory? Could you give any others examples of the similar partisan detachments?

- The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment is a unique phenomena - it is the largest Jewish partisan detachment of all that existed during WW II. This unique detachment could appear only in Novogrudok district. I came to this conclusion after reading the testimony written by the last head of Novogrudok Judenrat, the Ghetto, in a labor camp - Daniel Astrashicki, this testimony is now in the archive "Yad Vashem". It was two years ago, since then I actively explore this topic, do researches, that's why you can see on my table a lot of books about Adam Mickiewicz. Daniel Astashicki wrote in his testimony that Novogrudok lived in the shadow of a great polish poet Adam Mickiewicz. And as the Poles considered Mickiewicz a genius, and continue to think so - they treat him with a great respect and transfer this attitude to the Jews because Mickiewicz treated the Jews very well. He wrote a lot about that. That was him who in 1848 spoke in a synagogue about the necessity of forming a sovereign Jewish state. And the most interesting fact is that at that moment - the father of Theodor Herzl was in the synagogue, the person who later became the author of the constitution of the State of Israel. For many Jews Novogrudok was the symbol of "Erez Israel" - wherever they live, they still wake up and go to bed with the word "Novogrudok". And for the Poles it was a saint town where Mickiewicz was born. This is the basement on which this phenomenon was founded. Relations between the Poles and the Jews were different in Novogrudok. They were not ideal but at the same time there were no conflicts and pogroms. The thing is that Tuvia Bielski and his brothers - they moved to the woods and started their partisan life at the end of May - beginning of June 1942, and the Germans came on 4 July 1941. How do you think the Bielski could survive during one year of occupation without support? If the Poles, the Belarusians did not help them? They did not live at their own houses - they were hiding all the time at their friends' places, people gave them food, provided shelter although it was very risky. Many people did so, they did not stay somewhere for a long term.  The first year before the formation of the partisan detachment has a great meaning for understanding why it happened here. Before the war 6 000 Jews lived in Novogrudok, most of them were poor. There was also one unique fact connected with the Jews from Novogrudok, which is rarely mentioned: the organization of a local Jewish community. It's absolutely unique: emigrants from Novogrudok who after WW I settled in New-York provide financial support to those who remained. This money from the USA was used to create a totally new organizational structure of the whole community. There was no unanimity, there were introduced almost all the political parties, every profession had its own synagogue, were published two newspapers, which expressed absolutely different opinions. But nevertheless there was a high level of community organization, charity was very developed: 600 free meals per day for adults were distributed, 1,5 thousand meals per day for children and orphans... So there were a number of factors, which allowed the phenomenon of the "Bielski Brothers" to appear.

What concerns other partisan detachments, just to compare: in the same region of Naliboki forest there was another Jewish partisan detachment, "Sholoma Zorin Detachment". This detachment had less people - almost twice less. Besides, it was very different if to compare it with Bielski Detachment: first of all by the personality of a leader, combat missions, structural organization. That was a family partisan brigade as well, there were some craft workshops. But Shloma Zorin, for example, could marry a new girl from a neighboring village every week... there are some other stories that describe him not from the best side. There was no such a warm atmosphere as in Bielski brigade: till this brigade scored less than 500 people, Tuvia Bielski met a new escapee from the Ghetto in person, knew the story of every man. When he saw that a person feels really hard he could start crying with him. And at the same time Tuvia could be very cruel to save the detachment. There was a moment when some opposition formed in the detachment. Soviet Partisan Headquarters got a massage that Tuvia Bielski is engaged in speculation but not in strengthening of communism ideas. When Tuvia heard about that he put Kessler (the partisan, who made the denunciation) into the jail. Not for making the denunciation but for an unauthorized leaving of the camp. Those actions were a necessity to save the detachment.

- What's your opinion, how famous was the book written Nechama Tec "Defiance: The Bielski Partisans" outside the academic community before E. Zwik made a movie which was based on it?

- Without any droughts the movie made the book more popular. Maybe after this movie many of those who did not read book will get interested in it. Moreover, the second director was Nechama Tec's son. I did not say that this book used to be and will be famous outside close circles that explore some similar subject matters. First of all the book is not translated into Russian and this fact limits access to it even for Belarusian academic circles, because language barrier still exists. We have this book in our museum exposition and guests from abroad usually recognize this book. There is a different situation with the book written by Peter Duffy « The Bielski Brothers: The True Story of Three Men Who Defied the Nazis, Built a Village in the Forest, and Saved 1200 Jews». This book is translated in 10 languages. In Poland this book appeared at the time of the movie release and much more people know about it than about the book by Nechama Tec. Before writing his book Peter Duffy lived for a month in Novogrudok, we together visited almost all the places, where Bielski Brigade was located, he talked to people, who knew the Bielski, made interviews, collected document materials. It was real investigation journalism. What concerns Polish journalists and their book «Odwet. Prawdziwa historia braci Bielskic», they stayed here only for half a day. I told them about Naliboki and proved that the Bielski did not burn Naliboki, shoed the museum exposition devoted to the Bielski. As you may see different approaches exist even among journalists. Returning to the discussion of the Hollywood movie, I don't think that someone will decide to go to the outskirts of Vilnius and find the place where this movie was shot, 70 kilometers from the city Vilnius. What was the mistake - made by Hollywood? They did not shoot the film here near Novogrudok, this movie is not connected with the real scene of events, and they did not manage to create the required atmosphere. To my mind it could be made much better.

- In 2001, «Polish Institute of National Remembrance» has accused some members of The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment in the massacre in the village Naliboki, located 120 km from Minsk. As a result of partisan attack on this village on the 8th of May, 1943 -128 were people, including three women, some teenagers and a child of ten. It was found that among the assailants were few men of The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment. However Tuvia's son Robert and some survived partisans argued that The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment had no connection to this case because that day they were 100 km away from Naliboki. They sure that in the area of Naliboki The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment appeared only in August,1943.

Please, evaluate this situation. To what extent, on your opinion, the problem of "history politicization" takes place in the process of evaluation of The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment activity in different national histories.

- As far as I know the investigation of Naliboki case was started by the initiative of Polish emigrants in Canada. A special commission in Lodz City is dealing with this investigation for about 6 years. They refer to the fact that they don't have access to the archives in Belarus. This is very strange because Polish researchers come and work with Belarusian archives without any problems, for example, Bogdan Rusel. If they see the report of the head of the "Guerilla detachment Stalin" (Pavel Gulevich), who describes how nice he conducted the operation in Naliboki and personally killed 4 people, all the charges against the Bielski will be vanished. I have a copy of this document but due to some facts no one asks me about the assessment of this issue. Of course the Jews could take part in that operation. Because at that time in "Guerilla detachment Stalin" there was a Jewish wing that formed a separate Jewish partisan detachment # 106 headed by Shalom Zorin. In this operation could participate the Jews from Naliboki, they could also be members of the Gulevich's guerilla detachment. We know that before that massacre the whole Jewish community from Naliboki was executed by shooting and it could be a revenge for the death of the intimates. The fact that is absolutely reliable is that The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment was not there, because those partisans were near Berezovka village, 25 kilometers from Novogrudok and it is 40 kilometers from Naliboki. Just think over, if it was possible to transfer a partisan detachment on the occupied territory and to take part in this operation.

- Concerning the question of politization. First of all a polish village was completely burnt. Second, in this district in fact a civil war took place, starting from the end of 1943. "Armia Krajowa" - acted along the line Lida-Berezovka-Schuchit-Novogrudok. Just one "AK" detachment headed by Kasper Milishevski was in Naliboki forest. But according to the orders given by the Soviet command it was disarmed by that moment. At that time situation was really difficult. To my mind, the accusation from the Polish side against The Bielski Brithers guerilla detachment is the demonstration of a stronger anti-Semitism, which existed in Poland, if to compare it with what we had in Soviet Belarus. I think, for the Poles it is a very difficult and painful topic. May be because before the war they had very good relations here in Novogrudok. But those people were put into the conditions in which they had to close their eyes and see how the Germans killed their friends and not to react to that. We have five "Righteous among the Nations", among them two Polish families and three Belarusian, but that's not everyone who helped and saved the Jews. In my opinion, many Poles can't accept the fact, that the Jews were the part of the Polish Nation, and, by the way, that fact was accepted by Adam Mickiewicz. He declared it openly, that Polish State should be not only for the Poles, but for all the citizens of Poland, including the Jews. It was his supranational, supra-sectarian position that allowed him to have such vision. And it has a colossal meaning. I think that when we finish shooting the documentary about Novogrudok, we will show for sure a tremendous influence of Adam Mickiewicz. May be now you understand how unique Novogrudok is. Here could appear such Adam Mickiewicz, such Tuvia Bielski and a lot more we will discover...

- Do you think that such international projects can attract people's attention to the issues of Holocaust remembrance and remembrance of the Jewish partisan resistance during the WW11?

 - I think that your project is very urgent and interesting. Even if you meet people who know nothing about the Bielski - you will be able to attract their attention and make them interested in this topic, that's very important. I wish you luck in your study and I am looking forward to the results.

- Will the final result of our study in frames of our international project "Memory about Bielski Brothers in Belarus, Poland and Israel" be interesting for you? Will you be ready to assess our work?

- Yes, for sure, it would be very interesting for me. Concerning my assessment - I promise - I will be absolutely impartial. I think, it will be interesting for you to get it.

Совсем по-другому обстоят дела с книгой Питера Даффи «The Bielski Brothers:The True Story of Three Men Who Defied the Nazis, Saved 1,200 Jews and Built a Village in the Forest».
